A downloadable experience for Windows

Plot:

Oliver spends a lot of time wandering around the desolate side of town. When a heavy downpour starts, he stumbles upon a school he's never seen before.

Premise:

After School-A Vocaloid RPG is a survival-horror Vocaloid RPG experience created using RPG MAKER VX ACE. Playing as Oliver, you find yourself in a "Spirit World," an alternate dimension hosted by a single corrupted spirit. You meet new characters, and help spirits along the way while keeping an eye out for the corrupted host spirit. The player must help Oliver escape this world safely, while navigating the dangers it throws his way.

Heavy inspiration was taken from games such as End Roll and Ib, while the initial inspiration to start this project was taken from the song "Crushed Mary" by Mondaiji-P.

*Extremely important note*: This game began development in 2016. It does not end with a cliff hanger, and there is a scrap room explaining the game's direction, but it is important to understand the release of this updated but technically incomplete game was intended to provide players (particularly Vocaloid fans) an entertaining hour and a half experience.

I debated on whether or not to mark this as cancelled. However, because of the "Scrap Room," I think the experience itself can be considered complete even if it's technically not a complete game

Features:

  • 45-90 minutes of gameplay
  • Original soundtrack
  • Original art assets
  • Original story and characterization
  • At least 1 chase scene
  • Extra in-game content (the Scrap Room)

Controls:

    Arrow keys--Move character

    Esc--Menu/Backspace

    Enter key: Inspect/confirm/talk

Warnings:

  • Mild pixelated blood in one area
  • Some bullying (xenophobia specifically)
  • Existential time stuff (minor and limited to an avoidable diary entry)
  • Minor jumpscares (mostly sudden noises)
  • Chase scenes
  • Brief mention of animal death in a piece of dialogue
  • Maybe some minor flashing light (?) in one area (I'm not sure if it's bad enough to really mention but be aware !)

Things to Know: This experience is relatively accessible even to people who are not Vocaloid fans. No prior knowledge is required, but at least having familiarity with the characters will add a layer of enjoyment. Please note either way that this game is technically considered incomplete and targets the Vocaloid crowd most.

There's a With and Without RTP version. If you don't already own RPG Maker VX Ace or if you've never played an RPG Maker VX Ace game before, assume you don't have it and download the with RTP version.

This game is optimized to be played on Windows. With Mac, you may be able to use Winebottler or a similar program, but I can't help anyone with mobile devices or Linux. With Linux, I heard Wine on Ubuntu(?) can work, but I'm not really sure how.

Once you've downloaded the file, double click the crystal and unzip it into your desired folder.  It should be straightforward from there. If your browser warns you about unsafe downloads, it's probably because I'm an unestablished publisher, and all I can do is give you my word that I want you to enjoy what I've made to the fullest.

The character designs are so good! Did you draw them yourself? Oliver and Fukase are my favorites and glad that such underrated UTAU bois are included in this masterpiece! I will cherish you beautiful being forever, believe me! Chu~

Thank you for the kind comment! I drew all of the character art myself. The character designs for this game's Oliver, Ryuto, and Miku were also designed by me ^^

sup dude,

I'm so lucky to know about you, you made an amazing game, don't be shy to admit it. :D I read your story in the scrap room, you worked on it for so long...

It was an unforgettable experience, I will keep it forever in my heart, believe me.

Anyway, I hope you are happy and healthy now. Maybe I'll hear something interesting from you else.     chu~

Aaa thank you so much! It means a lot to me !!! ;;;; I hope you have a nice day!!

rpgmaker and vocaloid, two of my fav things in one thing.

I just played this today and I really have to say, this game is super charming! I love the style for the portraits and also the humor of the characters. The sprites are incredibly charming like god I really love how Oliver's sleeve was always flopping around like that when he walked.

It's sad it never got finished, but it's super understandable. I do hope to see more of your work though, it was a really fun experience :D

(+1)

Ahhh thank you so much ! I wasn't sure if people would notice the sleeve thing, so I'm glad to hear that ! He was born without that arm so it was challenging to find other ways of conveying to players that he doesn't have it since . It's just a natural thing to him that he won't really comment on

But yeah, thank you for playing !! I would've loved to have finished it but it just really wasn't going to happen...In the future, I do hope to release at least one more complete Vocaloid game with some of the cast here but that's probably going to take time even though I'm trying to make it short . I hope I can make it happen one day!! Please look forward to it if that day does come !!

i cant play the game as there is no button to play, im a player that only uses web

This is a game you have to download. You can't play it in a browser. You can't click things with a mouse either, it's keyboard controls only

aah ok i understand now

I haven’t played it yet, since I’m gonna stream it (if it’s ok by you ofc, you can tell me and I’ll take the stream down if not). It seems like a really good game tbh, and as a vocaloid producer, I feel proud of the community and it’s creations :)

Streaming is 100% okay! It's not much, but I hope you enjoy what time you do spend with it :)

YEEEES

ayo im just about to start playing but is there any way to make the window bigger? rn it's just a small square in the middle of my deskto

Alt+enter or pressing F1 and checkboxing "start in full screen." As far as I know, there isn't any way to make the windowed mode itself bigger, RPG Maker VX Ace just kinda defaults to this size. Probably the last time I'll use this program.

we need more vocaloid rpgs i loved it so much (btw THE ART AND MUSIC ARE AWESOME)

OMG. JUST OMG I JUST. OMG IT'S SO GOOD WHAT.

I want to thank you so much for making After School even if it was an incomplete fangame, the game really cheerd me up. I have been feeling down, lacking motivation, wasn't able to focus things around me much.

The game really reminds of when I used to love RPG maker games so much, but I've forgotten about it. My new obssesion with Vocaloid and the nostalgic feels of RPG maker game (the interactions, the pixel art, sounds) really made me feel happy! (and comforting)

I wish good luck for you and your future works/projects. Now, you've also inspired me to work harder too !

(also: thanks for Fukase cover of Taishou A, I really love Higurashi)

**sorry if I sound weird, English isn't my first language, and I was too excited and nervous while writing this.

Hi! I'm so glad it helped you a little! I think times have been hard for a lot of people, so if anything I create could help, I'm very happy to hear!

Thank you so much! I wish you luck in all your endeavors too and I hope you can feel a bit better!!

(No problem!! I used to really be into Higurashi and that cover is special to me so I'm glad to hear whenever people like it :)!)

**Your English is fine! Thank you very much for taking the time to comment!!

I find it so cool how you're making these, regardless if they aren't original. I love Vocaloid with a strong passion, and finished both of your games. Oh my god, they were both so awesome. You included like, a lot of the Loids that I wouldn't expect, that's how I knew that a lot of effort went into this! And how you took inspiration from some other amazing rpg horror experiences such as Ib, ..man. Keep up the great work Eddie!

oh man you played both? hhgsdg thank you so much it means a lot! I really do hope I can eventually make like . one more game . all the support has been very encouraging! it makes me feel less weird for making stuff like this ghsdh

Hello, I just finished playing this game, It was quite good so im just gonna put some of my thoughts here.

first, I love the characterization all of the vocaloids have, I always love seeing other peoples interpretations of these characters. secondly, man was the art and music good, the art was adorable and the music really added to the experience. thirdly, Miku and Fukase's pronouns made me feel happy and seen so thanks. also I'm really sad this never got finished, I had gotten so sucked into the game that I forgot it was going to end so when it did i got really sad....

also the extra stuff room was great! the option to switch characters to see special dialogue was very fun. to be honest seeing all the content written in the room did make me more sad that the game will never be finished.....

Thanks tor giving me a fun hour or two hope you respond :D

Hi! Thanks for playing!

I'm really glad to hear that! And yes, Vane did a really good job with the music! I'm sorry I couldn't finish, but I'm glad you seemed to enjoy it! All I wanted was for Vocaloid fans to enjoy the hour and a half's worth of playtime this small fangame had to offer, really, so to hear that was achieved makes me happy. Also I wanted to show off my Vocaloid characterizations since I thought they were a little unusual but never had the chance to show them off, there's that too. But yeah, the situation really was that unfortunately, it was either I cleaned up what I had and released it, or let it rot in my files never to be seen because there was just no way I could finish it anymore (it had been sitting unfinished in my files since 2016 so yeah,, it's really been a while).

But thank you! I really wish I could've done things like shown Fukase and Miku interacting in-game more but I figured a bonus room was the next best thing. I don't plan on doing anything with the Ryuto, Oliver, and Yuki from this game in the future, but I've been slowly developing Fukase and Miku's world for a while now and hope to do something with them in the future! Whether it'll be a game or something else, I'm not sure yet! Thanks again for playing and leaving me your thoughts!

Hello! I just finished the game and I am impressed. I wasn't expecting much, but my God, I got scared, I got angry and I was happy with certain things, it was an amazing game, I loved it so much, I will definitely play more often.

(+1)

Aaaa I'm glad you enjoyed it!! Thank you for playing and sharing your thoughts!!

(+1)

Hello, I played your game on my channel! The last part will go up tomorrow, but I thought it was an interesting game. The assets were really nice, and I enjoyed it overall.

Oh, thank you, I'll check it out sometime! Thanks for playing and letting me know your thoughts!

(+1)

Although the game is not unfinished, I thought it was really nice, loved the atmosphere and music. The artstyle is really lovely but boy the chasing events were pretty spooky.

I'm in love with your Miku's design, it's absolutely adorable!!

Thank you so much!! And thanks for playing !!

Is it possible that it would be available for Mac? If not I understand

(+1)

If you use Winebottler, or other 3rd party programs, it may be possible to make it available for Mac. Unfortunately RPG Maker VX Ace games are otherwise not able to be played on Mac : (. From what I heard, RPG Maker MV is a lot more flexible in regards to this (which I bought like. half a year ago), so hopefully this is the last game I make with VX Ace.

made an itch.io account just to say this- but anyways, heres a long comment on how much i love your game and how there should be more vocaloid rpg's because my adhd brain hyperfixating on vocaloid needs some kind of food

this game genuinely creeped me out, which honestly isnt saying a lot because i get very easily scared but the chase scenes were fast and terrifying holy crap i loved it- definitely had to try a few times in order to get away from the stuffed rabbit. i really really loved the way everyone was characterized, theres something weirdly unsettling about how optimistic ryuto is and how it hinted towards fukase being much more than it seems. (also, as a nonbinary person who uses they/it fukase using it/he/she pronouns and miku using they/them pronouns made me so happy- thank u for including that !!) i wont add much more since i dont want other people to be spoiled

props to vane for the music and you for the art- the music added so much atmosphere. my favorite was probably city streets, it just makes me Feel Things and i love how it sounds! your art is also really impressive, props to you! i love your art style and your pixel art.... mmmm i love it

the scraps room was SO fun to look at, i love how you can change into different characters and interact with the others- and seeing the notes and parts of how the game was made was really interesting! your story is creative and yuki is such a relatable character

i would love to leave you a few ko-fis but unforunately im a minor and dont have any money :( i would have loved to see this finished but i completely understand why you couldnt, games are hard to make and as an artist myself drawing that much wouldve killed me. take care of yourself - thanks for scratching my vocaloid brain itch lmao, i dont see many vocaloid rpg's out there and there should be way more- the characters and designs are so fun to play around with

I read this yesterday, but I was a little all over the place at the time and wanted to give this a proper response, so here I am now !!

I'm super glad that I seemed to have succeeded in the horror-aspect? and that's so interesting that Ryuto came off as that way! I actually was worried he broke the atmosphere too much, but I really wanted to keep him in because he's been in my story plans since 2013 haha--and I'm super happy to hear!! I'm nonbinary myself (they/them) and I wound up making a ton of characters nonbinary in my AU as a self-comfort, so to hear it makes other nonbinary people go !!! makes me happy too!!!

yeah Vane did a super good job! I'll let her know your thoughts on her music! and thank you! I worked super hard on it sdhdsgh

I'm glad you thought so! I thought I overdid it a bit but I always love bonus room content so I thought it wouldn't hurt to go all out for people who are like me,, (End Roll had the best bonus room I've ever seen because of the character switching idea I was inspired by)

Don't worry about it, I appreciate the thought! and no problem! a part of me felt like I was really strange for making something like this, so to see a comment like this really helps me build confidence haha, I think there should be more Voca RPGs too! I'm an artist but I actually really hate character designing, and there's so much you can do with Vocaloids since they already have set designs you can manipulate and alter according to your story needs! Actually, I was inspired by a small handful of Vocaloid RPGs but they're no longer available :( but it made me realize like--wow! Vocaloid RPGs can be this fun?? a part of me hopes more people will be inspired by this game like I was with those other smaller games but yeah, RPG Making is seriously hard--I at least hope this won't be the last Vocaloid RPG I make, I got RPG Maker MV so hopefully that helps (RPG Maker VX Ace was not fun to go back to)

Yeah please go ahead!! I'd love to see it if you post!

I just finished playing your game. Its sad that you didn't manage to finish it but I can understand completely that games take up alot of work. I really enjoyed what I got to see though!! Its amazing that you managed to make all art by yourself! And props to Vane for the music bc I was tempted to stay in Miku's room just to listen to it lol. In anycase...If you manage to make more games in the future I 100% support and will play through everything. Take care of yourself,Ed!!! (ps i was the one idiot that lost his shit in your post and in the wrong account sorry bout that)

(+1)

Wah thank you so much! I really do hope this isn't like. the last RPG I ever manage to make haha,, but I really appreciate the support!! And I'll try to!! I hope you take care too!! (a lot of people replied to that post so I'm still not sure who you are but it's okay!!)
